Research Interests
1) Molecular breeding for grapevine while integrating novel techniques.
Novel techniques in plant breeding are being developed for potential contributions to grapevine improvement. We have developed an effective Agrobacterium-mediated transformation using embryogenic Vitis cultures. Genes encoding antifungal compounds are being transferred to important commercial cultivars for the improvement of disease resistance. We also targeted some susceptible genes using CRISPR/Cas9 technology in order to increase resistance to powdery mildew in grape cultivar.
2) The genetic improvement of grapevine while integrating traditional techniques.
The interspecific hybridization is used to develop table grapes with early ripening, high yield, disease resistance and drought tolerance quality. Disease resistance is a high priority objective. Our best accessions, usually derived from native Chinese species, are used as parents to impart high levels of disease resistance to table grape progenies.
